Letters To Raffi

From Springbrook, AB ...

Anytime someone asks me who my favorite musician is I immediately respond "Raffi". I will be 34 years old this year. I love every song and every album. I learned to play the guitar so that I could sing and share Raffi with others. I have worked with people who have special needs and have loved sharing Raffi’s music.

Now I have children of my own and his music is even more important to me. I can’t describe how it warms my heart to hear my two year playing and singing “Baby Beluga” to himself. I have made a policy that anytime my children ask me to get out my guitar and sing I will stop what I am doing to share music making with them.

We love you Raffi, you are part of our lives every day. I actually have the “Quiet time” CD playing while my children sleep; I am hearing it right now. Raffi’s music playing in my home reminds be in each moment with my children of who I want to be as a mother. One of Raffi’s CD’s is playing in my home most of the time,

I have taught myself to use mindfulness of the songs, to remind me to be present and conscious, to be a gentle, wise and inspired mother.

My oldest daughter has special needs and arrives home from her day program at 4pm. At that time my toddler is getting hungry; we are making supper and working in the kitchen. This time has the potential for us all to be crabby. I always make sure that we have Raffi playing, we sing together, let the music propel or cooking. We use that time to be together and the music calms and bonds us.

Raffi’s passion, music, child honoring ideas and inspiration are helping me to steward open, loving, compassionate children.
