2010 started with the opening of the Centre for Child Honouring on Salt Spring and our first Guest Speaker, Dr. Joan Durrant. Read further for all the details.
Centre Community Welcome
The Centre for Child Honouring opened its doors on Sunday, January 17 with a Community Welcome from 2-4 pm at its beautiful new site on Salt Spring Island, a beautiful 22-acre facility that will house the Centre's programs and initiatives.
Guests included the Honorable Iona Campagnolo, former Lieutenant-Governor of BC and The Centre's Honorary Patron, who dedicated the Centre to its mission. She has referred to Child Honouring as a "vast change in the human paradigm" and spoke eloquently to the group of 200.
Raffi welcomed everyone and gave an update of recent key events. He delighted everyone by singing "Baby Beluga" and "Turn This World Around".
Raffi and Success by Six
On November 18 Raffi was pleased to join Success by Six in a celebration of International Children's Day and the 20th Anniversary of the Convention of the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child. He gave an impassioned presentation of Child Honouring in word and song.
On October 29 at Art Spring Theatre on Salt Spring Island, Raffi and 150 friends and fans celebrated the release of his latest cd, "Communion" which is the follow up to "Resisto Dancing". Raffi sang a number of songs from the new CD.
Raffi was joined on stage by long time friend and stellar keyboardist, Patrick Godfrey.
Raffi surprised all with an impromptu rendition of excerpts from the song Joshua Giraffe, which Patrick co-wrote. Those gathered also got to hear the Salt Spring Island fiddlers led by Carolyn Hatch.
It was a wonderful celebration of Raffi's new music for adults.
Anthology Published in Brazil
A Portuguese edition of the Anthology, Child Honouring: How To Turn This World Around has recently been published by Instituto Alana in Brazil.

We Need Your Help
Yes, the Centre now has a home. But for hiring staff, program development and furthering our initiatives, we urgently need your help. We're asking folks to donate 1% of their annual income - only 1 out of every hundred dollars, 10 out of every 1,000.
The children of the planet will thank you.
Raffi Goes to Ottawa
Former Senator Landon Pearson invited Raffi to Ottawa to participate in a meeting of Canadian academics in the Child Rights Academic Network (CRAN), at a meeting regarding implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Raffi also spoke with Member of Parliament, Marc Garneau (former Canadian astronaut) about his private members bill in the House of Commons calling for a National Children's Commisioner for Canada. Luxembourg has recently become the 25th country to have such a position.
The Centre's First Speaker
Our Speakers Series began in fine style with a warm welcome for an engaging talk by Dr. Joan Durrant, a Child-Clinical Psychologist and Professor of Family Social Sciences at the University of Manitoba. This was followed by a lively Q & A session moderated by Raffi.
For 20 years a researcher on the psychological, cultural, legal and human rights dimensions of corporal punishment of children in Canada and worldwide, Dr. Durrant spoke on "Child Rights & Positive Discipline: Honouring children at home and at school." A transcript of her talk is posted on Childhonouring.org.
Stay tuned for upcoming news on Dr. Durrant's return and about our next speakers.
We look forward to keeping you up to date as we move forward with our work and we thank everyone who has supported us.
